The GO Train stops at 4267 Bridge Street in Niagara Falls (at River Road), and the GO Bus at 4555 Erie Avenue (at Bridge Street) near downtown, or at its stop at Stanley Avenue & Highway 420. The Bridge Street and Erie Avenue routes are approximately 4 km from the Falls and only 2 blocks from the downtown district. Getting to Clifton Hill is easy from there with these options:

WEGO BUS SERVICE

Your round-trip ticket includes the GO Train to Niagara Falls as well as two-day access to WEGO, the hop-on, hop-off bus service that travels throughout the city of Niagara Falls and Niagara Parks. Just order online, present your Go ticket (printed or on your mobile device) and you’ll have access to WeGo.

Routes & Schedules

“The inclusion of WEGO bus service in this ticket package connects our guests to our iconic Table Rock Centre, providing access to Niagara Parks sites and attractions as soon as they arrive in Niagara Falls, making for a smooth and enjoyable visitor experience.” said Niagara Parks CEO David Adames

WeGo Bus takes you around Niagara Falls, once you arrive from the Go Train

WEGO features bus lines that all meet in Niagara Parks at Table Rock next to the Horseshoe Falls. This is the main transfer hub serving the city tourist areas.

While you’re visiting the destination, use your mobile device to locate the closest WEGO bus and get estimated bus arrival times.

The WEGO bus service will take you to Clifton Hill’s World Famous Street of Fun with stops in other key areas throughout the city. Clifton Hill offers the best in family-fun attractions and features Canada’s Largest Mini Golf: Dinosaur Adventure Golf!

The WEGO pass is hop on, hop off so that you can worry less and enjoy more! Use your WEGO pass to explore the Niagara Parks featuring: Journey Behind the Falls

Taxi

There are taxi stands located at the Niagara Falls GO Train stop for your convenience. There is no aggravation of hailing a cab with this convenient option.

Walking

If you came to Niagara Falls for the scenery, then this is your best option. To walk from Bridge Street to Clifton Hill and/or the Falls will take approximately a half hour. Take the Legacy Trail for a safe and quiet path. The trail connects downtown near City Hall to Bender Street by running along the old Canadian Pacific Railway corridor parallel to Ontario Avenue. It is a trail made from asphalt, which makes it easy for cyclists, the mobility impaired, and parents pushing strollers to use.

You can also take the world famous Niagara Parkway (River Road) with its unmistakable stone walls protecting pedestrians from the twelve foot drop into the scenic Niagara river gorge area.

Bicycles are welcome on the Niagara GO Train, and bike route maps are made available at the GO Train Niagara Falls station.

Since the Niagara Falls GO Trains are equipped to hold between 36-54 bikes, you can bring a set of wheels with you and enjoy some of top bike trails when you arrive!  This is a great opportunity to try the Niagara Scenic Parkway bike path and cruise your way through wine country.

Safety Never Stops

And no story of GO Transit would be complete without a pause to write about safety. As more customers return to transit, the transit agency wants to reassure riders their health and safety remains a top priority. Since the pandemic began, Metrolinx has implemented more than 40 permanent safety actions to keep transit safe. That includes mandatory masks, clear plastic barriers between seats on trains and buses, and hand sanitizer dispensers on vehicles and in stations.

La Grande HermineReading Time:  3 minutes -

If you’ve ever driven along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) from Toronto to Niagara Falls, you’ve likely noticed a mysterious ship resting along the shores of Jordan Harbour. This vessel, affectionately known as the “Pirate Ship” or “Ghost Ship,” has long fascinated passersby. Officially named La Grande Hermine, which translates to “The Big Weasel” in French, this iconic ship has captured imaginations for decades. Sadly, its time as a roadside curiosity has come to an end.

La Grande Hermine
Header Image by: Christine Hess

Originally built in 1914 in Quebec, La Grande Hermine began its journey as a ferry on the St. Lawrence River. It later became a cargo ship before being converted into a floating restaurant. However, in 1991, the ship was transformed into a replica of one of the ships used by Jacques Cartier during his 1535 exploration of the St. Lawrence River. This 140-foot-long vessel was the largest of three ships that Cartier used during his famous expedition.

In 1997, La Grande Hermine arrived at Jordan Harbour with ambitious plans to turn it into either a restaurant or casino. The ship was docked in the harbour, waiting for its new purpose. Unfortunately, the businessman behind the project passed away before these plans could come to life, and the ship remained abandoned, becoming a fixture along the highway. Over the years, the ship’s weathered and rusted appearance only added to its allure, drawing curious travelers who wondered about its story.

Then, in January 2003, tragedy struck. La Grande Hermine was set ablaze by an arsonist, leaving its hull charred but still standing. Despite the fire damage, the ship remained intact, and its haunting, half-burned frame became even more of a photographic draw for visitors. The scarred, skeletal remains of the ship gave it an even more ghostly appearance, earning it a place in local lore.

The Final Chapter: Removal of La Grande Hermine

In 2021, concerns about the ship’s stability and potential environmental hazards led to action by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Working with the Canadian Coast Guard, they removed the ship’s masts as a precautionary measure, after a technical assessment highlighted the risk of the ship collapsing into the water. While the masts were taken down to prevent further structural damage, the hull remained in place, though clearly deteriorating.

Recent reports from local Facebook groups and conversations with Niagara residents have confirmed that La Grande Hermine is now being dismantled and removed from Jordan Harbour permanently. Pieces of the ship are being taken apart as part of a final effort to mitigate environmental risks and eliminate safety concerns. This marks the end of an era for a ship that has long stood as an intriguing, if forlorn, roadside landmark.

Visiting Jordan Harbour Before It’s Gone

For those who still wish to catch a final glimpse of La Grande Hermine before it disappears completely, the ship is located at 2793 Beacon Boulevard, Jordan Station, Ontario. Though much of the ship is being dismantled, the site still offers a glimpse of its eerie, tilted frame resting just meters from the shoreline.

  • From Toronto: Take the QEW to exit 55 (Jordan Road), turn left at the stop sign, and left again onto Jordan Road. Turn left on North Service Road, and the destination will be on your right.
  • From Niagara: Take the QEW to exit 55 (Jordan Road), then turn left on North Service Road. The site will be on your right.

Admission to the site is free, and it remains a popular stop for those passing through. With the ship’s removal underway, this may be one of the last chances to capture a photograph of La Grande Hermine before it vanishes from the landscape forever.

Looking Back on the Legacy of La Grande Hermine

As La Grande Hermine is taken apart and removed from its decades-long resting place, its memory will live on in the stories shared by those who witnessed it. From its early days as a working ship to its later years as a historical replica and eventual abandoned landmark, the ship’s journey has been anything but ordinary.

Though the ship itself may no longer be part of the Niagara landscape, its story will continue to captivate those who remember seeing it standing proudly on the shores of Jordan Harbour. Whether you caught a glimpse of it on your drive to Clifton Hill or made a special stop to photograph its haunting frame, La Grande Hermine remains a symbol of adventure, history, and the passage of time.

As it fades into memory, La Grande Hermine will forever hold a place in the hearts of those who traveled the road to Niagara Falls, a reminder of the mysteries and stories that lie just beyond the beaten path.

A Scenic Drive Through Niagara: From the Upper Niagara River to Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Niagara Parkway is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, especially in the fall when the entire landscape is painted in vivid reds, oranges, and yellows. Starting from the Upper Niagara River, this scenic route takes you on a journey through some of the region’s most iconic natural and cultural landmarks, eventually ending in the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. This drive offers a blend of natural beauty, history, and charming experiences, making it the perfect fall getaway for visitors to Clifton Hill and Niagara Falls.

Starting Point: The Upper Niagara River and Dufferin Islands

Begin your scenic drive along the Upper Niagara River, where the calm waters flow towards the falls. This area is especially tranquil in the fall, with vibrant foliage lining the riverbanks. A quick detour to Dufferin Islands provides a serene spot to walk among small islands connected by bridges, surrounded by autumn colors.

Niagara Parkway South

Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse and Power Station

Continuing north, you’ll encounter the Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse and its surrounding gardens. In fall, the gardens are a colorful display of seasonal blooms, creating a peaceful and picturesque environment for a short stroll.

Right next door, you’ll find the Niagara Parks Power Station. This historic facility, now open to visitors, offers a glimpse into Niagara’s long history of harnessing hydroelectric power. The building itself stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering, blending into the natural beauty around it.

Parks Power Station

The Iconic Falls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Queen Victoria Park

As you drive further along the parkway, you’ll come to the mighty Horseshoe Falls. The cascading waters are a sight to behold, especially when framed by the rich fall colors of the surrounding trees. Just a bit further along, you’ll see the American Falls, another stunning view that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Across from the falls lies Queen Victoria Park, home to some of the most beautifully manicured gardens in Niagara Falls. In autumn, these gardens become even more striking, offering visitors a chance to relax amidst vibrant flower beds and tree-lined walkways.

Niagara Parkway

Oakes Garden Theatre and Rainbow Bridge

Next, stop at Oakes Garden Theatre, an outdoor amphitheater surrounded by lush gardens. The stunning view of the Rainbow Bridge from this vantage point is framed by the colors of fall, providing a perfect photo opportunity.

Niagara Falls City and Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge itself connects Canada and the U.S., but even if you’re not crossing the border, it offers an iconic view of the Niagara River.

Whirlpool Rapids, Aero Car, and Niagara Glen

As you continue your journey, the road follows the river to the Whirlpool Rapids, where the water rushes through a narrow gorge, creating dramatic swirling waters. For an unforgettable experience, take a ride on the Whirlpool Aero Car to get a bird’s-eye view of the rapids and the fall landscape.

Nearby, the Niagara Glen offers well-maintained hiking trails that wind through ancient forests and limestone cliffs. It’s a perfect spot for those looking to explore Niagara’s rugged natural beauty up close.

Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory

Further north, stop at the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, a 99-acre paradise of landscaped gardens that burst with fall colors during this season. Adjacent to the gardens is the Butterfly Conservatory, where you can walk among thousands of butterflies in a tropical indoor setting, a magical contrast to the crisp fall air outside.

Botanical

Queenston Heights and Brock Monument

As you reach Queenston Heights Park, you’ll find yourself stepping into history. This site played a key role in the War of 1812 and is home to Brock’s Monument, a towering tribute to General Isaac Brock. The park also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, all set against a backdrop of autumn foliage.

Brocks Monument

Niagara River Scenic Outlook and RiverBrink Art Museum

Just past Queenston, the parkway opens up to the Niagara River Mouth Scenic Outlook, where the river meets Lake Ontario. This peaceful viewpoint offers sweeping vistas that are particularly captivating in the fall.

Nearby, the RiverBrink Art Museum provides an opportunity to explore regional and Canadian art, all housed in a beautiful historic building overlooking the river.

Parkway Orchards and Niagara-on-the-Lake Wineries

As you head toward Niagara-on-the-Lake, you’ll pass through the heart of Niagara’s tender fruit region. Stop at Parkway Orchards, where you can pick up fresh apples and pears, which are in season during the fall. These orchards are a quintessential part of the Niagara experience, offering both scenic views and delicious local produce.

Not far from the orchards, the world-renowned Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries begin to dot the landscape. This is the perfect place to take a break and enjoy a glass of locally produced wine. With over 80 wineries in the region, each offering fall events and tastings, it’s a feast for the senses.

Grand Victorian Hall and Walker’s Country Market

As you continue along the parkway, take a moment to appreciate the Grand Victorian Hall, a beautiful historic mansion that stands as a testament to Niagara’s rich heritage. Nearby, Walker’s Country Market offers a variety of fresh produce, jams, and baked goods, making it an ideal stop for some locally made treats.

Historic McFarland House and Fort George

Just before entering the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, you’ll pass the Historic McFarland House, one of the oldest buildings in the region, dating back to the late 1700s. Tours of the house provide insight into Niagara’s early settlers and their way of life.

A short drive further brings you to Fort George, an important military post from the War of 1812. Visitors can explore the fortifications and enjoy interactive exhibits about the region’s military history.

Queen’s Parade, Shaw Festival, and Historic Downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake

Your journey concludes in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake, one of the most charming towns in Ontario. As you enter via Queen’s Parade, you’ll find yourself in a town that blends history and culture seamlessly. The Shaw Festival offers world-class theater performances in the fall, and the historic downtown is perfect for a leisurely stroll among boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants, all framed by the glowing autumn leaves.

The Perfect Fall Escape

From the peaceful Upper Niagara River to the quaint streets of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Niagara Parkway in the fall is an unforgettable journey through stunning landscapes, rich history, and charming rural life. Whether you’re visiting for the day or planning a longer stay, this scenic drive is a must for anyone looking to experience the best of Niagara’s fall colors and hidden gems.

Metrolinx is responding to the growing demand for bicycle and e-bike transport on the GO Train network by introducing new bike coaches and updating its bike policies. These changes aim to make commuting safer and more convenient for all passengers.

New Bike Coaches

To accommodate more bikes, Metrolinx is adding eight new designated bike coaches to its fleet, more than doubling the current number. These new coaches will serve the Kitchener Line and provide seasonal weekend service on the Lakeshore West trips to Niagara Falls. Each train trip will feature one bike coach, capable of holding up to 22 bikes, along with additional seating for passengers.

Updated Bike Policy

Metrolinx is also updating its bike policy to enhance safety across trains, buses, and stations. Key points of the updated policy include:

  • E-bike batteries must meet UL or CE standards and be free of physical damage or tampering.
  • GO Transit staff will inspect e-bikes and attach tamper-proof seals to those that comply with the new safety requirements.

The updated policy will be enforced starting April 9. GO Transit staff will assist customers by educating them on the new rules, directing them to bike coaches, helping distribute bikes evenly across train coaches, and ensuring that bike capacity limits are not exceeded.

Bike Safety Reminders

Metrolinx emphasizes safety with the following reminders for customers traveling with bikes or e-bikes:

  • Do not ride bikes or e-bikes inside GO stations or on platforms.
  • Avoid bringing bikes onboard weekday trains arriving at Union Station from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and departing from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • On regular GO Train coaches, a maximum of two bikes can be stored in each designated bicycle zone.
  • Always stay with your bike while on board and avoid blocking doorways, stairwells, or aisles.
  • Remove e-bike batteries before storing bikes on GO bus racks and bring the batteries onboard the bus.

Contact Information

For further details, customers can visit the GO Transit website to read the full policy. For media inquiries, journalists can reach out to the media relations team at mediarelations@metrolinx.com. For customer service, visit Metrolinx – Contact Us.

By making these changes, Metrolinx is enhancing the commuting experience for cyclists, ensuring a safer and more convenient transit environment for everyone.

Niagara Parks and local municipalities are getting ready for the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024, by implementing a comprehensive traffic management and safety plan. With road closures set to take effect across Niagara Parks properties, the City of Niagara Falls, and the Town of Fort Erie, guests are advised to plan ahead for potential traffic delays and changes to their usual routes.

Niagara Falls Road Closures

Here are some important points regarding road closures and transportation for the upcoming total solar eclipse:

  • Road closures will affect Niagara Parks properties, the City of Niagara Falls, and Town of Fort Erie on Monday, April 8.
  • Expect traffic delays, so it’s advisable for guests to plan their travel in advance.
  • Police have the authority to adjust road closures as needed for safety reasons.
  • There are parking lots available throughout the destination, including the Rapidsview Parking Lot, which offers a dedicated WEGO Shuttle service to the Falls.
  • Access to boat launches will be restricted on Monday, April 8.

The eclipse, projected to occur around 3:18 p.m., will be a major draw for visitors eager to witness this rare celestial event, especially as it unfolds over the iconic Niagara Falls. In anticipation of the large crowds expected to descend upon the region, a series of road closures will be enforced throughout the day, with adjustments made as necessary by local law enforcement to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists alike.

To accommodate visitors, parking lots will be available at various locations, including the Rapidsview Parking Lot, with a dedicated WEGO Shuttle service to Table Rock Centre. Public transit options such as the WEGO Bus Service and GO Transit are also encouraged to ease traffic congestion. Additionally, guests should come prepared with ISO-certified viewing glasses to safely observe the eclipse and be mindful of potential disruptions to cell service due to the high volume of visitors.

Guest Planning Considerations

Here are some important tips for guests planning to view the solar eclipse in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie:

  • Bring your own ISO-certified viewing glasses to safely watch the eclipse. Looking at the sun without proper eyewear can cause eye damage.
  • Niagara Parks may have limited glasses available, so it’s best to bring your own to avoid disappointment.
  • Expect increased traffic congestion starting from April 5, so plan ahead and ensure you have enough gas, water, and food.
  • Dress in layers and prepare for changing weather conditions.
  • Be aware that cell signal may be affected due to high visitor numbers, and bring cash in case electronic payment systems are unavailable.
  • Remember, tents or shade structures are not allowed in the Queen Victoria Park area.

As the region braces for increased traffic leading up to the eclipse, guests are reminded to plan accordingly by stocking up on supplies, dressing appropriately for varying weather conditions, and being prepared for potential changes in cell signal and electronic payment systems. By working together and planning ahead, visitors can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while witnessing this extraordinary natural phenomenon.
